Health experts from all over the world are trying to gather new information about this virus, although the list of its symptoms is getting longer. A recent study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology assessed data from 204 coronavirus patients in Hubei Province, China. The researchers found that 48.5% of patients who became infected with the virus came to the hospital having digestive problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The study revealed that before the coronavirus respiratory symptoms, the person shows digestive symptoms.
Problems like diarrhea and vomiting
The findings of this study have raised doubts over additional evidence suggesting that COVID-19, aka coronavirus, may cause gastrointestinal symptoms in some people. A case report published in the New England Journal of Medicine on America’s first coronavirus patient revealed that the patient first had thin diarrhea and stomach problems on the second day of hospitalization.
People have digestive problems
Co-editor in China of American Journal of Gastroenterology and MD Brennan M.R. Spiegel states that more research is needed to understand the role and effects of digestive symptoms in patients suffering from the coronavirus. Brennan also released a press release on awareness of digestive symptoms initially aimed to detect the coronavirus. It will help to prevent coronavirus when it is first detected.
In this study, COVID-19 patients with digestive symptoms were found to have worse clinical outcomes and a higher risk of mortality while those with no digestive symptoms were found to have lower mortality. Therefore, the importance of symptoms such as diarrhea is being emphasized so that COVID-19 does not develop respiratory symptoms along with the initial symptoms of the disease and can be detected beforehand. In this case, coronavirus can be detected early, thereby providing the right treatment and preventing it from spreading to others.
